Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been proposed as the basis for the next mainstream computing platform — the metaverse or immersive internet. Unrestrained by physical constraints, the spatial experience of the city and the home are set to be enhanced by virtual objects, effects and interfaces. In this lecture, Lucia Tahan will discuss the present and potential future of AR as a class of spatial media and argue its relevance to the architectural discipline.

Lucia Tahan is a Spanish architect and software designer specialised in spatial computing.Trained as an architect in Madrid, Jerusalem and Berlin, she is currently an incoming principal designer for augmented reality at Apple in Los Angeles. Previously she served as design lead at Meta in London. Through her independent practice she has produced installations for venues such as the Venice Architecture Biennale, Archizoom in Lausanne or the MAXXI Museum in Rome. Her built work comprises two houses in Spain.

The Berlage Sessions, a seven-part seminar series entitled “Architecture’s Transpositions,” examines the mediatic disciplinary transfers, from sixteenth-century abstracted geometries to twenty-first-century augmented realities. Topics will include the digitization of maps, the creation of digital replicas of landscapes, the modelling of multisensory extended reality experiences, the framing and photographing of buildings, and the imagined histories of architectural drawings and models.
